2Amys – Washington, DC

Pizza Washington D.C.

2Amys has proven to be a D.C. crowd pleaser, and not just for pizza.

I’m not sure if President Obama has gone there yet, but everyone knows that the best pizza in the D.C. area is served up at 2Amys. We’ve been going there ever since my niece, who had been working in the White House for Clinton shortly before, introduced it to us. There is almost always a crowd at 2Amys, but when we went at 6 PM last Thursday there were a few open tables. The room is large and cheerful, informal, but quietly elegant, with a happy buzz. As you enter on the right, you pass a very large wood pizza oven made in an open white-tiled kitchen. I had the Two Amys, a simple Neapolitan style pie with Tomato, fresh mozzarella, and it was delicious, the bubbling crust firm and tasty, the toppings of excellent quality. My wife had their “pizze d.o.c.” Margherita which had Tomato, buffalo mozzarella, basil, and cherry tomatoes. Our friend had Bruschetta with tomato fonduta. She never orders the pizza and says “I always order the wrong thing” but she made a good choice, the Bruschetta is a crunchy, garlicky masterpiece. Unlike the magnificent, austere Una Pizza Napoletana in NYC, 2Amys has a wide selection of “little things” which include fabulous Deviled eggs with green sauce which I always get, and devour happily. I would rate 2Amys slightly below the exalted level of Una Pizza Napoletana, but as an over all experience, including superb homemade Cannoli (I couldn’t resist) it is enormously satisfying. By the time we left, there were about 40 people waiting outside for a table.
