Caramel Donut Man – Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam – Tuesday, May 24, 2005

I had been walking the streets of Ho Chi Minh City for hours when a man rounded the corner and walked toward me carrying a huge platter. He offered me donuts and pastries slathered with caramel and sprinkled with sesame seeds. I bought a round pastry from him for 5000 Dong (about 30 cents American). He pulled a plastic baggie from his little blue pail and handed me my baked good. Then he was gone. The pastry was tremendous, oily, crispy, topped with a thick layer of sweet caramel, and filled with a surprise layer of egg yolk. I spent a good chunk of my final two days in Vietnam in District 1, but I never saw the caramel donut man again.
