Sour Patch Kids, your days are numbered. Lemons, look out. Cascade Brewing Barrel House, the Portland based company’s second establishment, specializes in “barrel aged sour beers” from Ron Gansberg, who’s figured out how to achieve balance tart flavors and seasonal fruits in his sour beers like very few brewmasters on the planet. He convinced me that there may be no need to get a sour fix in any other form.
Make no mistake that you’re entering a “House of Sour” at Cascade Brewing Barrel House.
Cascade Brewing Barrel House has a massive patio, and printed menus for beer and food, but some people prefer to be closer to the source. They even have some taps that draw straight from the barrel.
My $8.50 flight consisted of Cranberry, Blueberry, Nightfall (blackberry) and Supracot. Friends opted for other sours like Sang Rouge, a blood red beer that was out of this world.
Sometimes, sour beers can cause palate fatigue, but at Cascade Brewing Barrel House, Gansberg has such a firm grip on bacteria like lactobacillus and wild yeast like brettanomyces that my palate was ready for more pours.
