Guerrilla Tacos Ambrosia Melon Agua Fresca

Agua Fresca Los Angeles

Head to your local supermarket and it would be easy to think the world grows three melons: cantaloupe, honeydew and watermelon. Not so. SoCal farmers market stands reveal the truth, that the range goes dozens deep. Wesley Avila, the market-driven chef who helms Guerrilla Tacos with wife Tanya, parks his truck outside Handsome Coffee Roasters on Fridays, and recently delivered a phenomenal range of tacos featuring farmers market produce, plus an amazing Ambrosia Melon Agua Fresca ($3). The ambrosia melon looks like a cantaloupe from the outside, with ridged green and tan skin, light orange flesh within, and an almost floral aroma. In a Mexican style “fresh water,” the flavor really pops, and helped to cool my mouth after inhaling several of Avila’s increasingly spicy salsas.
