You might not know it based on the billboards, but there are dining options along Interstate 15 between Vegas and L.A. other than the Mad Greek and Alien Fresh Jerky. The best so far: Emma Jean’s Holland Burger in Victorville, founded along Route 66 in 1947 and family-run since 1979. Emma Jean passed away in 1996, but son Brian and his wife Shawna continue to produce hearty homemade comfort food.

Route 66 may be a bygone highway, but plenty of people have managed to find Holland Burger over the years, including Quentin Tarantino, who filmed parts of “Kill Bill 2” in the diner. I was compelled to exit on D Street after spotting a listing on the “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” website.”

I sat at the worn L-shaped counter and ordered twice as much food as I needed. After all, it’s not like I drive past Victorville very often. Might as well make it count.

The Petite Brian Burger ($5.59) still packed full-sized flavor. It was a patty melt served on sourdough with an overcooked hamburger patty that was reinvigorated with Swiss cheese, Ortega chilies and bread grilled with butter, garlic powder and Parmesan. On the side: excellent macaroni salad studded with red and green chilies and bits of hardboiled egg.

The Trucker Special Sandwich ($7.59) was just as devastating, a roast beef sandwich on buttery grilled sourdough with crispy bacon, Ortega chilies and molten Swiss cheese.

On the way out, a sign made it clear that customers should, “Keep your hands off the waitress.”

Emma Jean’s Holland Burger has limited hours, so make sure to time your visit accordingly.
