Chef Katsuya Uechi has become best known for teaming with SBE owner Sam Nazarian and designer Philippe Starck on four stylish Katsuya restaurants in Los Angeles. Still, he first gained momentum at a rustic Japanese restaurant called Katsu-Ya in a Studio City strip mall. The latest Uechi news shows he remains attached to his more casual roots, with plans to open a second Izaka-Ya by Katsu-Ya in the former Manhattan Beach home of Octopus. While the ABC license request may make it look like the change is imminent, an employee at the Beverly Center-adjacent original predicted “next year.”
