Chrysta Wilson started as a “web-based cake caterer” in June 2005 and was finally able to realize her dream by opening Kiss My Bundt Bakery on August 26.

Tomorrow is the official Grand Opening for her bundt cake bakery. From 10-11 AM:, there’s free coffee. Wilson went with organic, fair-trade coffee from Angel Orozco’s Coffee Cellar. From 1-2 PM, free mini bundts go to the first 500 people. The 501st customer isn’t out of luck. They’ll still receive free samples, which are available all day.

Wilson has 36 varieties of made-from-scratch bundt in her repertoire. Today, she offered 10 different varieties (called “kisses of the day), including carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, banana cake with cream cheese frosting and a caramelized banana chip; “luscious lemon drop” – lemon cake with lemon syrup and lemon glaze; and Callebaut chocolate cake with a dark chocolate glaze. Wilson’s bundts come in three sizes: mini, baby and big ’ol.

Why bundt cake? When Wilson was a seven-year-old girl growing up in Atlanta, she received an easy-bake oven and soon developed a passion for baking. She fine-tuned her baking skills in the Girl Scouts and shadowed her Aunt Dia in the kitchen, where she learned how to “take raw, boring ingredients like flour and eggs, and make something delicious and fun that makes people happy.” Aunt Dia baked her pound cakes in a bundt pan, so Wilson followed suit. For Wilson, bundt “symbolizes friendship (”Bundt” is derived from the German word for group of friends) and “represents tradition.” She wants her bakery to be “part of the local fabric.” Wilson has a Master’s in Public Policy from USC and worked for 10 years as a non-profit “community builder” before turning to baking full-time.

A team called The Retail Element designed the brick-fronted shop, which has a pink and brown color scheme. Wilson’s pink kissing-lips logo is everywhere. The cakes themselves rest on trays in a display case and behind the counter.
