Point the Way to Craft Beer Cans

Beer Los Angeles

Colorful can design matches Golden Road Brewing's vivid look in Atwater Village.

It is hard not to stare at the palm trees on the label in-between sips (straight from the can like a Neanderthal, if you are like me) of the newly canned Point the Way IPA and not be amazed at the supersonic growth of Golden Road Brewing.

They have gone from the aforementioned IPA and a hefeweizen to a bevy of brews including four new styles that debuted on Sunday at their newly opened brewpub in Atwater Village. Because only premiering your 16-ounce tallboy cans is simply not enough. You must create a whole new Canland! Which is a lot more fun than Middle Earth or Narnia.

Enough geekery, between now and the end of the month you can pick up a sixer of hefeweizen cans or the IPA (or both) at the brewery and then later this month you will be seeing the iconic palms in Southern California Whole Foods and the hefeweizen with its Shakespeare bridge in a select number of other retail establishments.

For those of you who equate cans with industrial watered down lagers, these will change your mind. Not only are the cans little works of art with a days-of-Los Angeles-past patina on the label, they are seriously good and extremely sessionable. If you needed further reason, they block out harmful sunlight and can be taken where bottles are prohibited. Oh and it’s brewed here so it’s gonna be fresh too.

The four new beers that popped onto the tap list cover a wide gamut of styles. There is a brown ale (Get Up Offa), a Belgian strong (Either Side of the Hill), a new version of IPA (Lost its Way) and a hefeweizen with a tequila twist. I really enjoyed that El Hefe Anejo but alas when I went back the next day to try it again it was out, as was the Lost Its Way. It had a great big vanilla and oaky taste with a burst of great banana flavor and some delicate spice as well. Golden Road brewmaster Jon Carpenter and his team have been busy.

Your Beer of the Week can be found way on the other side of town, within sight of the Pacific Ocean. Hi Hop Extra Pale Ale is the new house beer at the Venice Ale House on Rose Avenue. It has a nice citrus aroma and is followed by a sustained medium hit of that magical hop. This has beach beer written all over it.

Your Homework is to head to Glendale tomorrow. Because Friday, January 20, is 20% off day on beer purchases at two spots in town. Whole Foods will be offering the discount on their selection and Red Carpet Wine nearby will also have the same 20% off selected items. And all you have to do is make a choice from their selection. This is could be one of the easiest tasks that I have set before you or the hardest depending on how easy it is for you to choose a quality craft beer.
