Salem Valley Farms – Salem, CT – August 30, 2008

Farm-fresh ice cream is a New England tradition. Back roads host stands like Salem Valley Farms that are only open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. We ordered from teenagers at the barn window and found seats at a picnic table on a grassy hill. Across the road, a low-lying fog filled a field to dramatic effect.

My medium cup ($3.60) was treated to scoops of Purple Sable (black raspberry chip) and Peach. Both flavors clearly incorporated fresh fruit, but the latter was especially good, with big chunks of sweet peach.

This banana split ($5.99) was piled with toasted almond ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, cherries, rainbow sprinkles…and no bananas. It was the second time of the day that Allison ordered a banana dish, and it didn’t come with bananas. We ate at Smokash restaurant for breakfast, and her banana-stuffed French toast was missing bananas. Coincidentally, the Smokash owners were eating ice cream at Salem Valley Farms during our visit.
It was a warm day. Salem Valley Farms and the cool night air helped to provide sweet relief.
