Week in Pictures: Alex’s Lemonade Stand, Basque Cake, Ceviche + More
November 6, 2011 - Alex's Lemonade Stand reconvened at Culver Studios to honor the memory of a brave young girl who battled cancer for years and established a charity to battle other examples of childhood cancer. Chefs from around the country and local celebrities united to raise a substantial sum for the charity.
Every week involves a seemingly continuous stream of food, drinks and people. Of course not every taste or conversation is post-able, but the range of experiences is usually pretty amazing. Discover highlights from October 31 – November 6, 2011, some of which will help to fuel full posts.
November 1, 2011 – Valerie Confections hosted a week-long open house at their Silver Lake production kitchen, featuring complimentary samples each day. During my visit, they were handing out cookies, hot chocolate and Super Choc-o-Food, a chocolate bar with nuts, dried fruits, a groovy ’70s motif, and a risqué surprise.
November 1, 2011 – New Dragon delivered wonton noodle soup with a pork broth and vermicelli-like noodles in Chinatown, an Eat, Drink + Be Merry recommendation.
November 2, 2011 – There were no candles, but I did get a slice of cake on my birthday, Basque Cake from Atwater Village’s Proof Bakery, with a streak of port pear jam in the middle, crisp exterior and moist, almost custardy core.
November 2, 2011 – Part of my birthday lunch on Wednesday was a big goblet of ceviche de pata de mula (aka blood clam, aka concha negra) at
November 6, 2011 – Providence chef/co-owner Michael Cimarusti previewed the seafood from Connie and Ted’s at Alex’s Lemonade Stand. He’ll be serving dishes like New England clam chowder and Grandma Jo’s clam cakes in West Hollywood. He still has his grandmother’s original handwritten recipe from the ’60s.
November 6, 2011 – Michael Cimarusti took a short break from frying to speak with actor Timothy Olyphant, who was interviewing chefs on camera at Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
November 6, 2011 – Huckleberry and Sweet Rose Creamery teamed on a booth featuring more than a dozen options, including pumpkin ice cream, fig crisps and this spectacular blueberry cornmeal cake. Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan also chose Alex’s Lemonade Stand to announce the name of their upcoming restaurant – Milo and Olive – a place named for their son and (eventual?) daughter, which could debut at 2723 Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica as early as December, specializing in “pizzas, pastries, bread.”
November 6, 2011 – San Francisco based chef Michael Tusk of Quince and Cotogna prepared house-made, grilled pork sausage with pumpkin farro, pumpkin seeds and quince mostarda.
November 6, 2011 – Grilling sausage inspired dineLA Director Stacey Sun and Thirsty in LA founder Daniel Djang to break out their phones for Twitter and Instagram’s sake.
November 6, 2011 – Michael Tusk wasn’t the only chef who spotlighted pork during Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Chicago chef Paul Kahan prepared grilled pork belly flatbread, Cochon served Louisiana born boudin, Mozza served pork ribs and Sotto made 12 slabs of their signature porcetto, serving the crisp-skinned bellies with myrtle and quince mostarda.
