We’re Pouring, KBS + Beer Shelf Mischief

Craft Beer Los Angeles

When I first moved to Glendale, many years ago, there was little to no good beer to be found. Glendale had a brief flirtation with a brewery on Brand Boulevard by the name of GlenCastle, but that did not last long.

Now, beer is flowing and the latest addition comes to Glenoaks Boulevard with the recent opening of We’re Pouring. Co-owner John Sullivan recently sat down with me to give me the backstory behind the new gastropub.

Sullivan was/is an avid home chef who went the extra mile in gearing up to cook. Creating a special griddle that could be used to make Philly cheesesteaks on campouts and converting an oven so he could get just the right heat level to make pizza the way that he wanted. Combine that with a love of craft beer and a father that owns the building and you have the pieces that form We’re Pouring.

The name came late one night during the renovation phase when Sullivan voiced the hope that people would not find the restaurant boring. I hope we are not boring morphed into We’re Pouring and now Sullivan has left behind the life of a dental tech to run this business.

30 taps line the walls with a great variety to choose from. There are blonde lagers, sours, IPAs and dark ales from both local and regional players. Recent breweries on tap have been Brewyard Beer Company (from Glendale), Cellador Ales, Firestone Walker, Bottle Logic and Sanctum Brewing. You can go to their website to keep updated on what new beers have appeared.

Glendale is starting to catch up to craft beer popularity.

Your BEER OF THE WEEK should start showing up in early April. Founders Brewing is releasing their 15th year of their famed Kentucky Breakfast Stout (aka KBS). They start with an imperial stout spiked with “massive amounts of coffee and chocolate” and then they age them in oak bourbon barrels and then they put those barrels “in caves that were at one time gypsum mines, beneath Grand Rapids.” That is a lot of work for one beer.

This week your HOMEWORK is to make a little mischief. If you see a beer label that is obviously trying to sell beer via sex in either the image or the name, turn that beer label around on the shelf or in the beer cooler. This is a small protest, yes, but the craft beer world needs to be smarter and more creative when naming their blonde ale.

Your comment: ” If you see a beer label that is obviously trying to sell beer via sex in either the image or the name, turn that beer label around on the shelf or in the beer cooler.” Is the silliest thing I’ve ever heard of. I don’t need another person telling me what to say, how to say it and what to do. There are too many people trying to control everyone else. Stop.

Love this read. We can feel ourselves really being there and hearing this story. Love the bit about a little mischief. Our kind of style ; )
