A quick stop to fuel up before the San Diego Zoo turned into an hour-long tour of discovery at the Hillcrest Farmers Market, which not only has plenty of tempting produce, but also delivers one of the widest selections of prepared food of any market in California. Within two blocks, it’s possible to find Kenyan cuisine, raw food and dietary advice, along with SuperNatural, a concept from Christian Eggert, Tony Nguyen, Chris Perczichino and Anthony Tran to delivers “sea to sandwich,” including the Neptune ($9). A toasted Bread & Cie. brioche bun cradles a prodigious amount of plump, caramelized sea scallops, crispy Niman Ranch bacon, squiggles of rust-colored tri-chile aioli and green avo-ponzu, with a bed of local greens.
