Restaurant Los Angeles

The Fix is a fast-casual burger option that offers traditional patties, plus ostrich and buffalo.

Paul Joo and wife Celestine opened The Fix on September 25 in the former Silver Lake home of BBG Café. Paul’s cousin owns Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers in San Francisco, and he worked with her for a couple years. For The Fix, he adapted the family recipe.

The Fix serves beef, turkey and veggie burgers, plus more unusual ostrich and buffalo. “I got a lot of requests for ostrich,” says Paul, “and the buffalo was a family recipe. It’s a lot leaner.” All of The Fix’s meats are “100% natural, with no hormones or antibiotics.” They’re also certified humane. To keep prices down, Paul and his wife decided not to offer full service.

Step to the counter, choose a patty, then feel free to add cheeses like Provolone, Havarti or Gruyere; “Fixings” like bacon, avocado or chili; and house-made sauces such as basil pesto, peppercorn ranch or Dijon bistro sauce.

In case you don’t want to mix and match, the Joos have designed four “Special Burgers”:

  • The Ono Burger ($8.95) – mushrooms, teriyaki, pineapple, Jack, mayo
  • The Pesto Burger ($8.45) – basil pesto sauce, Jack, mayo, tomato
  • The Rodeo Burger ($9.95) – bacon, onion rings, BBQ sauce, mayo, cheddar
  • The Pilgrim Burger ($8.95) – turkey, cranberry relish, lettuce, tomatoes, onions

Sides are cooked in zero trans fat soybean oil, including Garlic Fries ($3.95), Sweet Potato Fries ($3.95) and Homemade Breaded Shrooms ($3.95).

To drink, expect soft serve ice cream shakes and frozen yogurt smoothies. Flavors include blueberry, peanut butter and coffee.

Manager Stephen Whipple attended art school, so he painted the walls with blocks of color, a system of parsley-like branches and – coming soon – “Silver Lake” painted in silver graffiti.

Paul considers The Fix “an eco-friendly restaurant,” so he and his wife installed a recycled glass and resin counter along the west wall and a recycled wood ordering counter. All containers and “plasticware” are made from corn. Paul says, “It’s good for everybody to conserve and not contribute too much waste.”

If all goes well, the Silver Lake original will be the flagship store for a Fix burger chain.
